4 DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions below apply.
4.1 Particleboard
Panel material manufactured under pressure and heat from particles of wood (strands, wood flakes, chips, shavings, sawdust, and similar) and/or lignocellulosic material in particle form (flax shives, hemp hurds, bagasse fragments, rice hulls, wheat straw and similar) with the addition of an adhesive.
Wood-based particleboard may be manufactured from virgin, reclaimed or recycled fibre or combinations of each.
Recycled materials are defined in AS 4707. Within the definition for ‘Recycled material’, Item (a) refers to reclaimed fibre and Item (b) refers to recycled fibre.
4.2 Particleboard flooring
Particleboard that is manufactured to provide the durability and stiffness specified in this
Standard as required for flooring and other structural applications.
5 CLASSIFICATION
Two classes of flooring are specified as follows:
(a) Class I Purticlehoard flooring:
(I) For use in Australia where weather exposure may occur during construction.
(ii) Requirements for placement and fixing in AS 1860.2 shall apply.
(iii) is not suitable for conditions of permanent dampness, where particlcboard moisture content is permanently in excess of 16%.
NOTE: Depending on methods of use, this may occur in environments where relative humidity and temperature exceed 80% and 30°C for consecutive months.
(b) Class 2 Particlehoard flooring For use in regions where weather exposure during construction is not necessary.
NOTE: Class 2 flooring may not be suitable for usc in Australia where there is weather exposure during construction.
