1.5.29 Explosion-protected
Technique of protection by one or more methods as defined in AS/NZS 3000 (hazardous areas section) to prevent the ignition of flammable vapours and gases or combustible dusts in a hazardous area.
1.5.30 Explosion-protection
Specific measures applied to electrical equipment to avoid ignition of a surrounding explosive atmosphere.
1.5.31 Explosive atmosphere
Mixture with air, under normal atmospheric conditions, of flammable materials in the form of gas, vapour, mist or dust, in which, after ignition, combustion spreads through the unconsumed mixture.
1.5.32 Fail-to-safety (fail-safe)
Any failure to the machinery, its associated safeguards, control circuits or its power supply that leaves the machinery in a safe condition.
1.5.33 Fixed equipment
Equipment which normally remains in its installed position.
1.5.34 Flameproof enclosure
Enclosure for electrical equipment that will withstand, without damage, an explosion of a prescribed flammable gas or vapour within the enclosure and will prevent the transmission of flame such as will ignite the external prescribed flammable gas or vapour for which it is designed, and which operates at an external temperature that will not ignite a surrounding flammable atmosphere.
NOTE: A flameproof enclosure, in accordance with the foregoing definition, will not necessarily or ordinarily be weatherproof, dustproof, etc.AS NZS 4871.1 pdf download.
